MaTo Museum

The MaTo Museum is conceived as an urban attraction. The museum will house a museological narrative of the life and work of the Cypriot composer, Marios Tokas. Designed as a cultural hub, it provides the community with a much-wanted cultural point of reference.

A spatial narrative is set to showcase the different qualities of the composer’s life and work. A sequence of interconnected spaces that vary in character, including open spaces, double-height spaces, enclosed areas, and two-story verdant passages, is taking visitors on a journey and exploration of the composer’s artistic path.

The museum is located in Ypsonas, Cyprus, a settlement that is currently characterized by a fragmented urban fabric of small properties and warehouses. The lack of public buildings and open public spaces has resulted in a gradual land expropriation of smaller properties. This way, Ypsonas seeks to establish communal spaces that are necessary for the development of public life.

To respond to this challenge, Land n Arch creates a supra-local public building complemented by an adjacent open public space. This way, a new urban and cultural point of reference is established for the community.

To strengthen this cultural hub, the relationship between the building and the square is reinforced. A generous ramp is emphatically directed from the square to the entrance of the museum while gently rising from the square’s level. The open public space is designed in direct relation to the museum, acting as a unifying element in the diverse and complex urban fabric of the area. At the same time, it receives the flow of visitors from the urban streets and diffuses them to the surface of the square, highlighting the position of the museum in the urban context.

While harmonizing with its immediate surroundings, the Museum and Square Unit aims to elevate the cultural significance of the settlement. Together, they act as an essential point of urban punctuation.

Drawing inspiration from the colors and textures of its surrounding environment, the MaTo Museum declares its significance by standing out from the settlement of Ypsonas. As Ypsonas continues to develop, this emerging cultural hub is anticipated to play a crucial role in promoting the public life of the community.
